The LUMINA Journey: From Innovative Materials to Next-Generation Telecom Applications

7 October, 2026

The LUMINA project has officially started its journey towards low-power, ultra-high-bandwidth technologies for next-generation telecommunications. Running from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2030, LUMINA brings together its research, technology development, integration, demonstration and impact activities in seven interconnected work packages. The journey begins with system definition and prototype design (WP1) and the development of core IAM-based components (WP2). In parallel, wafer-scale fabrication (WP3) will support the transition of technologies towards scalable fabrication. As the project progresses, WP4 will focus on assembly, packaging, control electronics and integration, while WP5 will characterise and demonstrate the resulting prototypes under TRL6 conditions. Throughout the entire project, WP6 ensures project, risk and innovation management, while WP7 drives communication, dissemination, exploitation and standardisation to maximise the visibility, uptake and long-term impact of LUMINA’s results. Together, these activities create a clear pathway from system requirements and advanced component development to integrated prototypes and demonstration.
